Ontario · Driver licensing

Ontario · Foreign licences & experience

The deadline is 60 days. Since July 1, 2026 Ontario credits up to one year of experience from outside Canada, and you need an authentication letter from the authority that issued your licence. Details are in the province guide below.

Alberta · Driver licensing

Alberta · Licence exchange & experience

The deadline is 90 days. Country not on the exchange list? A knowledge test at a registry office, then a road test; your experience is reviewed under the GDL Exemption Program. Details are in the province guide below.

British Columbia · Driver licensing

British Columbia · Moving from another country

The deadline is 90 days. Country not on ICBC’s list? A knowledge test and a road test; proof of more than two years of experience affects your licence class. Details are in the province guide below.

Exchanging your foreign licence, province by province

Each province has its own deadline, tests and way of crediting your experience. This is a summary of the official sources for awareness only; the licensing authority decides.

Ontario DriveTest · ServiceOntario

Deadline: You may use a valid foreign licence for 60 days after moving to Ontario; after that you need an Ontario licence.

Exchange agreements: No Arab or African country is on Ontario’s exchange-agreement list, so tests are required.

So how do you get the licence?

  1. Go to a DriveTest centre with your ID and valid original licence, and take the vision and knowledge tests to get a G1.
  2. With at least 12 months of foreign driving experience you may take the G2 road test right away.
  3. After G2, wait at least 12 months, then take the G road test for the full licence.

Experience credit and documents

  • Ontario credits up to one year of driving experience from outside Canada, however long you have driven (since July 1, 2026).
  • To get the credit: your valid original foreign licence plus an official letter from the issuing authority confirming it is authentic, in English or French.
  • If the licence is not in English or French you need a certified translation from an embassy, consulate or qualified translator.

Truck licence

Commercial classes issued outside Canada cannot be exchanged. Class A needs a Class G licence, a medical report and mandatory entry-level training (at least 103.5 hours) before the road test.

Alberta Registry agents

Deadline: You must exchange your licence within 90 days of becoming an Alberta resident, even if you travel outside Alberta during that time.

Exchange agreements: No Arab or African country is on Alberta’s exchange-agreement list, so a knowledge test and a road test are required.

So how do you get the licence?

  1. Go to any registry office and take the Class 7 knowledge test, with proof of Alberta residence and of legal status in Canada.
  2. Surrender every other licence you hold, valid or expired.
  3. Return after 10 business days to learn whether your application was accepted; if you are eligible they book your Class 5 road test.
  4. After passing the road test you get a Class 5. With fewer than 24 months of experience it is a Class 5 GDL (with conditions).

Experience credit and documents

  • The GDL Exemption Program credits your previous driving history, so you can take the road test without waiting a year as a learner.
  • For a full Class 5: proof of two or more years of driving experience under their Minimum Acceptance Standards.
  • Submit originals only, with a written translation of anything not in English. If your licence is not in English, Alberta strongly recommends carrying an IDP.

Community experience, not an official rule: Many registry offices accept the licence on its own without a driving-record letter, and some people had an expired licence accepted as proof of their years of experience. The official page does not say this, so ask the registry before you go.

Truck licence

Class 1 needs a full Class 5 (not GDL), a medical report and the Class 1 Learning Pathway, which replaced MELT on April 1, 2025.

British Columbia ICBC

Deadline: You have 90 days after moving to B.C. to switch your valid licence to a B.C. licence.

Exchange agreements: No Arab or African country is on ICBC’s licence-exchange list, so a knowledge test and a road test are required.

So how do you get the licence?

  1. Visit an ICBC office with two pieces of ID (primary and secondary) and surrender your licences; ICBC uses your licence and experience to set the class and tests.
  2. Take the knowledge test, then the road test.
  3. If you cannot prove more than two years of non-learner experience you enter the Graduated Licensing Program with a Class 7.

Experience credit and documents

  • Proof of experience: your original current licence if it shows two or more years, or an original driving record or letter of experience from the licensing body showing the first issue date.
  • ICBC credits up to 15 years of experience once it receives an acceptable driving record showing your original licence date.
  • Translations are requested at ICBC’s discretion and must be done by an ICBC-approved translator.

Truck licence

Class 1 needs a full-privilege licence, a medical exam and mandatory MELT training at an ICBC-approved school.

Things to know before you drive

Short tips; every official fact links to its source. Follow the road one stop at a time.

    Want a lower insurance premium?

Compare several quotes and ask which discounts apply to you.

    Steps
    1. Get quotes from more than one licensed insurer or broker.
    2. Ask about a winter tire discount; in Ontario, FSRA says all insurers must offer one.
    3. Ask about a discount for a recognized driver-training course.
    4. Bring a letter from your previous insurer about your record; some insurers consider it.

Note: the discount amount and conditions are set by each insurer and vary.

    Buying a used car?

Before you pay: learn the car’s history, make sure no debt is attached to it, and have a mechanic inspect it.

    Steps
    1. Copy the VIN from the car itself and match it with the registration and the seller’s ID.
    2. Order a vehicle history report such as CARFAX Canada: reported accidents and damage, odometer readings, registration across Canada and the U.S., and theft or salvage status.
    3. Check for a lien: if you buy a car with a debt on it, the lender could take it from you. At CARFAX the lien search is only in the “Vehicle History Report + Lien Check” version.
    4. If a lien shows up, have the seller pay it off and give you a release letter from the lender before you pay.
    5. Have an independent mechanic inspect it and take a test drive; a report only shows what was reported, so an unreported accident will not appear.
    6. Choose your province below for its sale papers, inspection, tax and registration rules.

Choose your province to see its rules and official links.

Note: a seller who refuses a history report or a mechanic’s inspection is a red flag; pay no deposit before you see the car and its papers yourself.

Is your car ready for winter?

Below 7°C, all-season tires begin to lose traction, according to Transport Canada.

    Steps
    1. Install winter tires before the cold arrives.
    2. Keep an emergency kit in the car: blanket, flashlight and snow shovel.
    3. Slow down and leave more distance to the car ahead.

Note: some provinces and roads have mandatory tire rules; check yours.

How do I keep my car in good shape?

Simple, regular maintenance saves a lot of money later.

    Steps
    1. Change the oil as the owner’s manual recommends.
    2. Check tire pressure monthly, especially in cold weather.
    3. Ask a dealer about safety recalls for your car using its VIN.

Note: ask for a written estimate before any repair.

  5. Stop 5 of 7

How do I register a car and get plates?

Registration and mandatory insurance differ by province.

    Steps
    1. Prepare proof of ownership and proof of insurance before you go.
    2. In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, registration is tied to basic coverage from MPI and SGI.
    3. For other provinces, open your province’s source in the list above.

Note: never drive an unregistered or uninsured vehicle.

    Looking for a driving school?

Choose a school from your province’s official list, and know what the course gets you before you pay.

    Steps
    1. Choose your province below and open its official list of schools or instructors.
    2. Find out whether the course is mandatory where you live; in Saskatchewan, for example, it is for a first licence.
    3. Ask how many months the course takes off the wait before the road test.
    4. Ask about teaching language, fees and the refund policy, and get it in writing.

Choose your province to see its rules and official links.

Note: a school’s licence is not a recommendation from zaayt.com, and any promise of a guaranteed licence is a red flag.

  7. Stop 7 of 7

Do you need a car right now?

Before buying, add up everything: payments, insurance, fuel and parking.

    Steps
    1. Try your city’s public transit for the first months, if you have no children with you and do not need the car for work.
    2. Ask your city about reduced-fare passes for lower incomes.
    3. If you live near work, a bicycle may be enough in summer.

Note: parking can be expensive; ask before signing a lease.
