We do not recommend these until you answer the questions.
Why you see this Starting the application gives you an APEGA ID, which you need before ordering your WES report.
Create a myAPEGA account and complete the “Determine Your Application Type” questionnaire.
Start the application and note your APEGA ID.
There are three 90-day deadlines: complete the 12 application steps and pay (or it is deleted); after paying, provide outstanding requirements such as the WES report (or it is withdrawn); and once a staff member is assigned, provide the final documents. APEGA suggests waiting until your WES report is complete before submitting. Fees are non-refundable.
How you know it is done When you have an APEGA ID.
Why you see this APEGA requires both from every applicant; they are part of the online application.
Comes after:
Proof of identity: a clear copy of a valid document from APEGA’s list for your application type (PDF or image, under 16 MB). Expired documents are not accepted.
Documents on APEGA’s list: Canadian birth certificate, citizenship certificate or card, PR card, Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), Canadian passport, Canadian driver’s licence and non-Canadian passport. “Valid” means dated and current.
For example, a valid non-Canadian passport is accepted for an EIT and a Licensee, but not for a professional member application. See APEGA’s table.
If your name differs between documents, add the legal name-change document or marriage certificate; an undocumented mismatch delays the application.
Character declaration: an e-form in the application asking about professional, criminal or academic findings. A “yes” does not by itself prevent registration if you provide the explanation and documents asked for; a false statement can.
How you know it is done When your proof of identity is uploaded and the character e-form is submitted.
Why you see this A professional member application needs proof of status in addition to proof of identity.
Comes after:
Accepted per APEGA: Canadian birth certificate, citizenship card or certificate, a valid Canadian passport or a valid permanent resident card. Some need both sides.
Not accepted: work visa, driver’s licence, an expired passport or PR card. If your document expires within 6 months, APEGA may ask for more.
How you know it is done When the document is uploaded in step 2 of the online application.
Why you see this Under 48 months of experience, or a degree outside engineering. An EIT works under a professional engineer’s supervision while gaining experience; registration is valid for 8 years.
Comes after:
Pay when your WES report is nearly ready; after paying you have only 90 days.
If your degree is not in engineering, APEGA asks for a current, detailed résumé.

How you know it is done When APEGA confirms your paid application.
Why you see this The programme is for forcibly displaced people who studied in a programme country, live in Canada or the US and cannot obtain official records.
You need copies of your diploma or transcript.
Access is through a partner organisation that confirms your eligibility. Ask your local settlement agency.
Ask APEGA in writing whether it accepts a Gateway report for licensing, and which report type.
APEGA itself is on WES’s list of Gateway partner organisations (Edmonton and Calgary), so start with APEGA.

How you know it is done When the partner organisation confirms eligibility and APEGA confirms in writing that it accepts the report.
Why you see this WES is the only evaluator APEGA recognises, and it accepts only the course-by-course ICAP report. An immigration report must be upgraded.
Comes after:
If you are not sure of your report type, check your WES account: if it already is ICAP course-by-course, no upgrade is needed; change your answer above.
From your myAPEGA application (step 5) follow the link to WES, or request the upgrade in your WES account.
Choose APEGA as recipient and ask for the report in English.
WES prices for a completed evaluation: C$115 to edit it (including Document-by-Document to Course-by-Course) and C$114 to upgrade to ICAP. Ask WES which one applies to an immigration evaluation.

How you know it is done When WES confirms the upgrade order.
Why you see this WES is the only evaluator APEGA recognises; it accepts only the course-by-course ICAP report, sent by WES electronically.
Comes after:
From your myAPEGA application (step 5) follow the link to WES: choose Canada, the standard application, APEGA as recipient and course-by-course ICAP.
Follow WES’s country requirements for sending records, and ask for the report in English.
If you studied in Sudan: WES asks for an official transcript in English sent by the university electronically or in a sealed envelope signed or stamped across the flap, and a clear copy of the degree certificate in English uploaded to your account. Write your WES reference number on every document and do not send originals. The list depends on the institution and credential; check it on WES’s Required Documents page.
If the report does not reach APEGA within 90 days of paying for your application, the application is withdrawn, so APEGA suggests waiting until the report is complete before paying.

APEGA does not accept international records from applicants. Its page also mentions transcripts sent directly by the university for non-CEAB degrees; ask APEGA whether that applies to you as well as the WES report.
How you know it is done When WES confirms your order and records are received.
Why you see this APEGA says an active EIT does not send transcripts again and needs no new WES evaluation.
Comes after:
Exception: if you claim postgraduate work experience credit and your postgraduate transcript was not sent before, your university must send it to APEGA directly.
If your EIT status expired, or you were not in good standing before starting your licence application, change your answer above: academic documents must be sent again.
How you know it is done When your myAPEGA application does not ask for academic documents.
Why you see this This roadmap is built for degrees from outside Canada, and the WES evaluation here is for foreign credentials. That is why the WES steps are hidden for you.
Comes after:
Per APEGA: your university sends your official (conferred) transcript to APEGA directly, electronically to registration@apega.ca or sealed. Transcripts you send yourself are not accepted.
The rest of this roadmap is built for graduates from abroad; if anything is unclear, ask APEGA in writing before you pay.
How you know it is done When your academic documents show as received in your myAPEGA application.
Why you see this It does not depend on your WES report, so you can start today. Since 18 July 2026, eight are Canadian-work-environment competencies (1.1, 1.6, 1.9, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 5.1, 6.2).
Download APEGA’s optional Competency Self-Assessment Worksheet (CSAW) and compare your experience.
For each competency: situation, your actions and the outcome, written as “I”, not “we”.
Each competency is rated 0–5. Each category average must be 3.0 (technical, communication, team effectiveness, professional accountability) or 2.0 (financial and project management, social and environmental accountability). The eight Canadian competencies have their own minimums shown in the CBAT tool; below them you cannot submit.

How you know it is done When your examples are ready to enter in the application.
Why you see this The letter lists exams or courses. Receiving it does not mean you have met the requirement.
Comes after:
APEGA lists three options: write the exams or take courses, request reconsideration or reassessment, or withdraw.
You must attempt them within 2 years or the application is withdrawn.
Exams are online in spring and fall, up to five per session; the pass mark is 50%. The next session is April–June 2027, with registration closing January 29, 2027.
A formal re-read costs $330 (GST included).
Fee: CAD 500 plus tax · Per technical exam · APEGA
How you know it is done When APEGA confirms in writing that you met the requirement, not when you finish an exam.
Why you see this APEGA wants to verify the quality, depth and breadth of your education.
Comes after:
Follow APEGA’s letter and deadlines. You have 2 years to attempt them.
If the letter assigns the FE exam: register in myAPEGA first ($75 + GST to APEGA), then with NCEES (US$225). Do not register with NCEES before applying to APEGA or you become ineligible. Results usually come in 7–10 days, and you may retake as often as you wish.
How you know it is done When APEGA confirms in writing that you met the requirement.
Why you see this The decision is not the end of the road.
Comes after:
You can ask APEGA for reconsideration or reassessment.
Professional Licensee P.L.(Eng.): a defined scope, at least 6 years of post-education experience, 2 of them in the scope under a licensed professional’s supervision. Read the detailed rules.
Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET: accepts evaluations from ACESC members such as IQAS and WES; ask ASET whether degree holders are eligible.
How you know it is done When you have chosen the route that fits you.
Why you see this The exam covers professionalism, law and ethics and is required before licensure. You register once your application is in progress, but you can study now.
Why you see this You need a professional engineer application in progress with APEGA to register.
Comes after:
Register in myAPEGA before the deadline. It runs five times a year; after the deadline you cannot reschedule or cancel.
If you were assigned the FE or technical exams, APEGA advises focusing on passing those before registering for the NPPE. You have four attempts in total, and if the NPPE is your last requirement you have one year from the Board of Examiners’ letter to write it.
Why you see this After your education is accepted (or requirements met), your experience reviewed and the NPPE passed.
Comes after:
The Board meets monthly except July; you receive the decision by email by the end of the following month.
When you receive it, record it here.
Published processing time: APEGA: up to 6 months, counted from when the application is complete and APEGA has told you it is “in review”. Since 1 October 2026 Alberta’s regulation requires non-health regulators to decide 90% of applications within 6 months; this is a target for the regulator, not a promise to each applicant. (the body’s time, not your own time to complete)
How you know it is done When you receive a written decision.
Why you see this A deferral means something more is needed before a decision. It is neither a licence nor a refusal.
Comes after:
The letter states what is missing (additional experience or exams) and how long you have. APEGA’s decisions page mentions 2 years from the letter date. Without progress in that time, the application is withdrawn.
When you have completed everything (partial updates are not processed), send a Request for Update to registration@apega.ca with a non-refundable $225 + GST fee.
If you believe the decision contains an error or the process was unfair, request reconsideration; if qualifications were missing and are now ready, request reassessment. Both within 90 days of receiving the letter, $225 + GST each, to resubmissions@apega.ca.
When the new decision arrives, change “The decision you received” in “The Board of Examiners decides on your licence” to the new result.
How you know it is done When you have submitted the Request for Update. The map then shows you are waiting for their new decision.
Why you see this A refusal is not necessarily the end of the road, but we do not know your case. The letter itself is the reference.
Comes after:
Reconsideration: if you believe the Board of Examiners made an error or the process was unfair. State the error; do not send new information.
Reassessment: if qualifications were missing from your first application and are now ready.
Both within 90 days of receiving the letter, at $225 + GST each, non-refundable.
Appeal to the Appeal Board: a Request for Appeal to the Registrar & CEO within 30 days of receiving the refusal notice. The deadline is short, so read the page early.
Other routes may fit: Professional Licensee P.L.(Eng.) for a defined scope, or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET. Their requirements differ; read their pages.
How you know it is done When you have chosen your next step. This roadmap does not track the other routes.
Why you see this EIT registration is not the full licence. You work under a licensed engineer’s supervision until you complete the experience; registration is valid for 8 years.
Comes after:
Keep a record of your positions, dates and the people who know your work; you will need them as references and validators later.
When you reach 48 months, change your experience answer here and the map shows the full licence application.
How you know it is done This step is not ticked off: it closes by itself when you reach 48 months and update your experience answer.
This step closes by itself when you change your answer above.
Why you see this We do not know your case. The letter itself is the reference.
Comes after:
Reconsideration or reassessment within 90 days of the letter ($225 + GST each).
Per APEGA’s decisions page: you may request reconsideration or reassessment, or appeal to the Appeal Board with a request to the Registrar & CEO within 30 days of receiving the refusal notice.
Read the letter for the reason. If anything is unclear, ask APEGA in writing before the deadline.
Other routes may fit, such as Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET. Its requirements differ; read its page.
How you know it is done When you have chosen your next step. This roadmap does not track the other routes.
All engineering disciplines (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical and more) follow the same APEGA route. If your experience is in a different field from your degree, extra study or experience may be required.
