First month · Home, children, work and language
Language is the key to work, and classes may be free for you.

- A language assessment centre via the services finder. In Québec: Francisation Québec.
- What to bring
- Your status document
- ID
- What to do, step by step
- Book a language assessment (CLB) — required before a class.
- Pick LINC (English) or CLIC (French) at a time that suits you: day, evening or online.
- Young children? Ask about childcare during class.
- Add conversation circles at the library.
Depending on your status:
- Refugee or asylum claimant: Asylum claimants aren’t covered by IRCC classes until they become protected persons — ask about provincial or community programs.
- Work or study permit: Temporary residents aren’t covered by IRCC classes — ask about provincial, library and college options.
Note: free IRCC classes are for permanent residents and protected persons. Québec’s French program is separate with its own rules.
