Citizenship test: what is on it?

Twenty questions in 45 minutes, and you pass with 15 right. Questions cover citizens’ rights and responsibilities and Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws and symbols.

  1. Check that the test applies to you. In most cases it is required if you are 18 to 54 on the day you sign the application. The IRCC page explains the exceptions.
  2. The test has 20 questions, multiple choice or true or false, and takes 45 minutes. You pass with at least 15 right answers, which is 75 percent.
  3. Questions cover rights and responsibilities, history, geography, economy, government, laws and symbols. No question tests your language; if you are invited to an interview, the officer notes how you communicate there.
  4. You take it in English or French. You get up to 3 chances to pass within the 30-day test period, and most applicants are invited to take it online.
  5. The online test is taken on a computer, laptop or tablet with a webcam, in Chrome or Safari, not on a phone. The webcam takes random photos to confirm you are alone.

Caution: Rules, ages and attempts can change, so check the IRCC pages before relying on any number here.
