First 3 months · Build your future step by step
An expired document can stop your work or travel.
- Where to go
- Your IRCC account and IRCC’s official pages.
- What to bring
- PR card or permit
- Passport
- A record of your trips outside Canada
- What to do, step by step
- Put every expiry date (passport, PR card, permit) in your phone calendar.
- Apply to renew well before expiry.
- Log every trip outside Canada: dates and reason.
- Travelling? You need a valid PR card or a PR travel document (PRTD) to return.
Depending on your status:
- Work or study permit: Permit holders: apply to extend before your permit expires, and update your SIN starting with 9.
- Refugee or asylum claimant: Asylum claimants: keep every IRB and IRCC deadline, keep your address updated, and consult a lawyer before any travel.
Note: permanent residents must be in Canada at least 730 days in the last 5 years; they needn’t be continuous.
